Nigeria is at risk of Marburg virus importation and impact ? NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said that Nigeria is at moderate risk of the importation and impact of the Marburg virus.

Speaking days after Ghanaian authorities announced death of two patients who were diagnosed with the virus, the Director General of NCDC , Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa disclosed that Nigerian is at risk due to proximity (same region), high traffic from Ghana and countries that share borders with Ghana.

Adetifa further stated that while there are no cases of Marburg virus in Nigeria, several measures are being put in place to prevent an outbreak of the disease in the country.

He said the NCDC is on high alert, adding that Nigeria has the capacity to test for the virus presently at the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja and the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital laboratory Centre for Human and Zoonotic Virology.

Adetifa also revealed that diagnostic capacity can be scaled up to other laboratories if required as Nigeria has the resources (human, technical and laboratory) for prompt identification and management in the event of a single imported case.

He said;

“Based on available data, the overall risk of both importation of the disease and its potential impact on the Nigerian population is said to be moderate as assessed by NCDC experts and partners given the following:

“The proximity (same region), high traffic from Ghana and countries that share borders with Ghana, the incubation period of 21 days of the virus, heightened surveillance at point of entry, Nigeria’s capacity to respond to the outbreak in country and the fact that persons with MVD transmit the virus when they become symptomatic unlike for SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19 that can also be transmitted by infected persons without symptoms.”

Adetifa who also disclosed that risk of importation may be further reduced as the current situation in Ghana is under control as reported by Ghana Health Service, added that point of entry surveillance has been heightened, trained rapid response teams are on standby to be deployed in the event of an outbreak and the NCDC’s Incident Coordination Centre (ICC) is on alert mode.

He also said the NCDC is also amplifying risk communication efforts and will continue to work with states and partners to strengthen preparedness activities which include; review of risk communication protocols, plans and messages in the event of an outbreak.

Nigerians have also been advised to avoid non-essential travel to locations where the outbreak is reported for the moment, and also avoid direct contact with blood, saliva, vomit, urine, and other bodily fluids of people with suspected or confirmed Marburg virus.

Marburg virus causes a rare, highly infectious disease and severe haemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates just like the Ebola virus.

The virus can be transmitted by exposure to mines or caves inhabited by Rousettus bat colonies, which carry the pathogen.

Once a person is infected, Marburg can spread through human-to-human transmission via direct contact with blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of these individuals, and with surfaces and materials contaminated with these fluids. It is not an airborne disease.

On average, the virus kills half those infected, says the World Health Organisation, but the most harmful strains have killed up to

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Thursday, July 14, convicted Baba Ijesha of indecent treatment of a child, sexual assault, and attempted sexual assault in a 2-hour judgement.

He was however discharged and acquitted of count one and count six, which were: sexual assault by penetration and attempted sexual assault by penetration.

Any indecent act against children is unacceptable and I have never and will never support such."

A Facebook user has raised an alarm over a 12-year-old who was married off to a 50-year-old man with over 22 children in Benue state.

According to Lucky Udu, the girl's family deceived her into thinking she was coming to school, but instead she was married off as the man's third wife.

Udu said the man alleged beats the girl every night and forces himself on her but has only succeeded once in sleeping with her.

He further disclosed that the girl gave her address as a green small house behind Primary health care Adaka, Makurdi in Benue State, Nigeria.

Udu wrote;

I just finished interviewing this 12yr old girl who is married to a 50years old man (who is a Christian) in Benue state. Her family deceived her and sold her out to the man. The girl thought she was coming here to school but unfortunately, she was brought down to become his 3rd wife. This man is a poor unsatisfied farmer who already has two wives and his children are above 20 years old.

He beats her every night and forces himself on her but has only succeeded once in sleeping with her. It's been two months now, she needs help, she is crying and wants to be rescued but unfortunately, I‘m only a stranger here in Benue state and for some days now, I have been trying my best to rescue her through organizations like Naptip Nigeria but they are slow and unenthusiastic in rescuing her. I need more people on social media to be aware of this situation and help this young girl. She is only 12 years old. Pls, share.

Her address is a green small house behind Primary health care Adaka, Makurdi in Benue State, Nigeria.

The community seems to be protecting the man. I have been careful with my movements but I filmed her while he was away. We sneaked her out and returned her thinking we would rescue her that evening or the next day but nobody cares and I’m in a strange land with nothing but a phone and a camera.

This is my fifth state since the beginning of my tour, lives are being changed, let this be the case for this young girl too. Thank you

Medical student fakes own kidnap to obtain money from parents, woman spikes his drink at nightclub and steals the cash

Police has arrested a 23-year-old medical student of Makindu Medical Training College, Kenya, after he staged his own kidnapping to milk money from his parents.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations-DCI, in a statement on Thursday, July 7, said Edwin Kamau ‘disappeared’ last Sunday before he blocked his father and called his mother claiming to have been kidnapped.

"He told her that his kidnappers wanted a ransom of Sh70,000, to set him free before he hanged up on her," the statement read.

"His distraught parents reported the matter to police officers who immediately launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.

"However, the calls persisted with Kamau telling his mother that his kidnappers were on the verge of eliminating him.

"Determined to secure the life of their son, they sent Sh10,000 yesterday via mobile money and an additional Sh40,000 today.

"Immediately Kamau received the initial Sh10,000, he went to a club in Thika to irrigate his throat and make merry in the company of a babe he had met. And as fate would have it, the woman turned out to be a pishori admin who laced his drink with an unknown substance and stole the cash.

"Today after regaining control of his faculties, he called again and his parents sent a further Sh40,000 which he withdrew and secured in his shoes.

"By this time, detectives had closed in on him. Upon questioning, Kamau said that he had squandered money meant for his last semester’s school fees and was wondering how he would raise money in order to sit for his exams, hence the fake story.

"He further disclosed that he had been ‘kidnapped’ alongside two other students whose parents had paid their ransoms.

"Detectives recovered Sh38,600 from the student who is now in custody at Koyole police station pending arraignment."

Romelu Lukaku tells Chelsea fans 'I'll show you' as he post about cutting ties after leaving the club and returning to Inter Milan

Romelu Lukaku has aimed a subtle dig at Chelsea by referencing rap lyrics about 'cutting ties if the energy ain't right' in a cryptic post on Instagram after leaving the club.

Lukaku, 29, left the Blues to rejoin Inter Milan on loan last week following a disastrous season, where he scored just eight Premier League goals all season.

The Belgian striker fell out of favour under Thomas Tuchel after seeing his form dropped in the second half of the campaign. He later did a bombshell interview with Sky Italia in which he hit out at his head coach and expressed his desire to return to Inter.

After securing his switch to Italy, the Chelsea's club-record signing has taken a thinly veiled swipe at his employers on Instagram.

Alongside a black and white photo of the player checking his phone, Lukaku referenced lyrics from 'Scorpio', a 2021 hit by American rapper Moneybagg Yo, which appear to describe his acrimonious Stamford Bridge exit.
