A 55-year-old physically challenged man, Ambrose Okeke Ifedilichukwe, who was arrested last
Thursday at the Kotoka International Airport, Ghana, for swallowing substance suspected to be cocaine,
has died.
Ghana Times reports that, Ifedilichukwu gave up the ghost on
Saturday after undergoing a surgery at the 37 Military Hospital,
where he expelled 46 of the pellets.
Earlier the 55-year-old physically challenged man during an
interrogation had confessed to officials of the Narcotics Control
Board, NACOB, that he was meant to deliver the swallowed
substance to somebody for a fee of $6,000.
Nii Lante Blankson, Deputy Executive Secretary in charge of
Enforcement at NACOB on Monday said he suspected that some of
the pellets might have erupted in the Ifedilichukwe’s stomach.
Blankson further disclosed that the suspect was on an Emirate
flight from Cote d’ Ivoire en-route to Hong-Kong via Dubai, but
while on the flight, the flight attendants noticed he was fidgeting.
He added that on getting to the Kotoka International Airport,
Ifedilichukwe was handed over to airport officials who took him to
the Aviation Clinic where it was observed that he had swallowed
illicit substances.
Following his confession, an x-ray examination was carried out
on the suspect at Akai House Clinic, which confirmed the presence
of illicit substance in his stomach.
It was learnt that a staff on duty at the clinic advised that the
substance be expel before proceeding with treatment, this led to
Ifedilichukwe been taken back to the Aviation Clinic.
Ifedilichukwe’s condition was said to have worsened and he was
rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where he was eventually
operated upon. He died while receiving treatment.
